medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In addition to the discussions on anchorites:
Another book to look at, alongside Clay's seminal work, is Ann K. Warren's
"Anchorites and their Patrons in Medieval England" (Berkeley: University of
California Press, 1985).
It sounds like Professor Sauer's work will make a valuable contribution to
our understanding of this important area of medieval religious life. You
might be interested to know of some other research in the field...
Dr. Eddie Jones of Exeter University has Rotha Mary Clay's unpublished notes
on anchorites and is currently working on a new book on the subject. I
believe he is focussing on anchoritic literature, but is updating some of
the details in both Clay and Warren.
Last summer a conference was held on 'intersections of gender and
enclosure', organised by the University of Wales (Aberystwyth). Some of the
papers will be published in November 2004 by The University of Wales Press.
Furthermore, The Anchoritic Society has recently been set up to promote
study of medieval anchorites. It is run by Dr. Susannah Chewning, and has a
listserve mailing address if anyone wants to be kept up to date by e-mail.
It also sponsors sessions at Kalamazoo and Leeds IMC.
Very best to all,
Johan

Purrfect. As Al's Gertrude site reminds us, the author of the Ancrene Riwle
advised: 'Ye shall not possess any beast, dear sisters, save only a cat'.
Which leads me off on another tagent: Has anyone produced a gazetteer of
anchorhold survivals in England? I mean the survival of any sort of
architectural or archaeological remains, however slight.
I should welcome advice on this.
Graham
