medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
According to medieval law, apparently, a woman who was guilty of
'fornication' could be condemned to death, while prostitution was
acceptable; in one text on which I am working, a woman who becomes pregnant
outside marriage is given the choice of being executed or becoming a
prostitute ('a comyn woman'). I don't know how widespread this situation
was, or how long it lasted, and wondered if anyone could point me towards
useful information, for example, religious precedent or any information on
how frequently (if at all) this actually occurred.
Many thanks.
