medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. April) is the feast day of:
Anthimus of Nicomedia (d. 303) A native of Nicomedia, Anthimus became its
bishop. He was beheaded in Diocletian's persecution, and his death was
followed by a major crackdown on the Christian community there.
Theodore the Sanctified (d. c. 368) Theodore was a disciple of Pachomius,
whom he succeeded as abbot of Tabennisi.
Machalus (MacCaille, Maughold) (d. c. 498) According to legend, Machalus
was a pirate. After being converted by St. Patrick, he was ordered as
penance to chain himself and set sail in a coracle without oars. He washed
up on the Isle of Man, where he became bishop.
Zita (d. 1272) Zita was a servant in Lucca. At first criticized, she soon
won admirers for her great piety. Many miracles surrounded her, including
angels baking the bread for her while she was in ecstasy. A popular cult
developed soon after Z's death.
Peter Armengol (d. 1304) The Spanish noble Peter spent some time as a
brigand before settling down and joining the Mercedarian order. He spent
the rest of his life in the work of ransoming captives, even going to
Africa as a hostage for 18 Christian children. There was suffered such
tortures that he is sometimes regarded as a martyr, although in fact he
survived the experience.
James of Bitetto (blessed) (d. c. 1485) The Dalmation James became a
Franciscan lay brother. There are accounts of how, as the convent cook, he
would flavor the food with his copious tears. He was a noted visionary and
ecstatic. J. returned to his home before his death, and his incorrupt body
is still preserved in Bitetto.
