hand. Take a look at:

how the hand got there might have something to do with the nature of the host
of the original image : http://www.lucifuge.de
there's an identical hand in the .jpgs on these pages :
http://www.lucifuge.de/grafik/historia/ludwig_hl/lh_aigues.jpg
http://www.lucifuge.de/grafik/historia/ludwig_hl/lh_schlacht.jpg
http://www.lucifuge.de/grafik/historia/ludwig_hl/lh_schrift.jpg
it looks like it's the guy's "watermark" --he uses it to identify his own
.jpgs.
note that the text page which references the Urban/Cluny illumination
http://www.lucifuge.de/themen/religio/bernhard.htm
identifies it as "Papst Urban II. bei der Einweihung des dritten
Clairvaux-Klosters von Cluny"
which, doesn't make a whole lot of sense, to my germanistically challenged
ear.
curious site.
best from here,
christopher
