the recent article in the Bautz Biographisch-Bibliographischen Kirchenlexikon
(http://www.bautz.de/bbkl/f/fulbert_v_c.shtml ) seems to suggest that he may
have been born in France.
Silvester II was, of course, Gerbert von Aurillac, his teacher at Reims.
For art historians, Fulbert is the guy who rebuilt his cathedral on a vast
scale, the crypt of which survives beneath the present, post-1194 structure.
See the superb article by Margot Fassler, "Mary's Nativity, Fulbert of
Chartres and the Stirps Jesse: Liturgical Innovation circa 1000 and Its
Afterlife," Speculum 75, 2000, p. 389
and her ‘Liturgy and Sacred History in the twelfth-century tympana at
Chartres,’ Art Bulletin, 95 f(1993) pp. 499-520
and her articles "Fulbert of Chartres" and "Chartres" for the New Grove
Dictionary of Music & Musicians.
