medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In canto XXIII (traitors), Dante meets another 'Joyful Brother': Alberigo de
Faenza. Alberigo was insulted by a member of his family, but he (Alberigo)
said he forgave him, and asked the familymember to come over for diner,
together with his son. When the fruit was to be served, Alberigo screamed
'The fruit!!' (or 'le frutta'), and that was the sign for his men: the
familymember and his son were killed at the table.
