medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As said, Dante meets the ‘frati godenti’ in Canto XXIII (indeed hypocrites).
The f.g. he meets, are Catalano (Guelph) and Loderingo (Ghibellian); in 1266
(one year after Dante’s birth) they came to Firenze, to become ‘podestà’
(mayor). The city council asked them to make peace between the Guelphs en
Ghibellians. Pope Clemens V instigated them to use their influence to chase
away the Ghibbelians and their German mercenaries, which they did. In Canto
XXIII they tell Dante (sanctimonious, of course) that the people of Firenze
still can see what they have done: in Gardingo (a district of Firenze) the
Uberti’s (part of the Ghibellians) burned down a lot of houses, after
gutting the district.
“Frati godenti fummo, e bolognesi; / io Catalano e questi Loderingo /
nomati, e da tua terra insiemi presi, / come suolo esser tolto un uom
solingo, / per conserver sua pace; / e fummo tali, / ch’ancor su pare
intorno dal Gardingo.” (Inf., 103-108)
