medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. April) is the feast day of:
Aphrodisius and companions (1st cent.) A thoroughly discredited French
legend (but I figure that pious fables have a place on our list) tells that
A. was an Egyptian who sheltered the holy family during the flight to
Egypt. He later made his way to Languedoc, where he and several companions
were martyred.
Pollio of Pannonia and companions (d. c. 304) Pollio was a lector of the
church of Cybalae, Pannonia (Hungary). He was burned alive there.
Theodora & Didymus (d. 304?) This is my day for pious fables. This one
reports that Theodora was a beautiful young Christian virgin of Alexandria.
She was sentenced to prostitution for her intransigence in refusing to
sacrifice to the state gods. But Didymus rescued her by changing clothes
with her so she could escape. When discovered, D. was sentenced to death.
Theo. immediately returned to surrender herself in D's place. They were
then both executed.
Adalbero of Augsburg (d. 909) An uncle of St. Ulric, Adalbero became a
monk in 850. He was abbot of Ellwangen and then Lorsch (which he
reformed), then bishop of Augsburg. He was also an active political
figure, serving as advisor to Arnulf of Bavaria and later as regent for
Arnulf's son, Louis the Child.
Cyril of Turov (d. 1182) The Russian Cyril was a hermit, but left the
hermitage to become one of the great Russian bishops and preachers. Little
more is known of his life, but he is said to have encouraged the Greek
religious tradition in Russia, and to have been a great biblical scholar.
Luchesio of Umbria (d. 1260) The first Franciscan tertiary. L. was a
miserly merchant and money changer, converted (along with his wife
Bonadonna) by Francis in c. 1221. The couple spent the rest of their lives
in good deeds and penitence.
