medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi all,
From ‘The Age Of Robert Guiscard’ (p129) by G A Loud: -
‘The papal archdeacon Hildebrand travelled to Capua in the spring of 1059
and persuaded Prince Richard to provide 300 knights with whose aid Nicholas
defeated and captured his rival for the papal throne.’
From this and other references it is not clear to me whether Nicholas II was
directing proceedings from afar or was himself in the thick of the fighting
against Benedict X. Can anyone please clarify this and more generally which
other popes, as popes, led their troops into battle? So far I have –
Leo IX – against the Normans in southern Italy in 1053
Lucius II – against republicans in Rome 1145
Julius II – too many to mention
Thanks
Charles
