medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List: In that message of Apr 23 on dowries, I forgot to
mention two things. The first is that the marriages in Languedoc
follow Roman Law traditions, unlike those of north France. The
second is that, although eleventh century marriages (very few
charters) deal with the highest classes and often convey land and
political or ecclesiastical rights, those of the twelfth century
(much more frequent) derive from a vastly gresater social range,
and usually convey only money. In spite of the class differences,
I think this really reflects the fact that the economy had become
or was beoning monetarized. John Mundy
