medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. April) is the feast day of:
Apollonius (d. 183) Apollonius was a Roman senator, denounced as a
Christian by one of his slaves. He defended himself before the Senate with
a thoroughgoing apologia for Christianity. . . and was then beheaded.
Laserian (Molaise) (d. 639) The Irish monk Laserian was abbot of Old
Leighlin (Co. Carlow) and also founded Inishmurray (Co. Sligo). L.
encouraged the Roman calendar for celebration of Easter---which may have
led to a late legend reporting that L. was consecrated bishop in Rome and
served in Ireland as "papal legate."
Cogitosus of Kildare (8th cent.) Tradition names Cogitosus as a monk of
Kildare and author of the important early vita of St. Brigid.
Wicterp (Wiho) of Augsburg (d. 749) Wicterp was abbot of Ellwangen, and
instrumental in founding the important monasteries of Fussen, Wessobrunn,
and Kempten. He eventually became bishop of Augsburg.
Ildesbald of Dunes (d. 1167) After a youth spent at the Flemish court,
Ildesbald became a canon and then a Cistercian at the monastery of Dunes.
He was the third abbot of Dunes.
Galdinus of Milan (d. 1176) Galdinus was a native of Milan. He was
chancellor to Archbishop Hubert, and along with many others fled the city
when Frederick Barbarossa attacked. Immediate return was impossible (Fred.
razed the city); Galdinus was elected archbishop in absentia and also made
a cardinal. When he was able to return, he was responsible for the
rebuilding of Milan.
John (d. 1526) John was a tailor of Janina. He was buried alive at
Constantinople "for upholding his faith" (as my source reports). I confess
that I included this guy today mostly in hopes that somebody could tell me
something more about him, since the Ottomans didn't make a regular practice
of religious persecution.
