The Isle of Man seems to have been connected with Iona and then the
Bishopric of Orkney. In her book Scandinavian Scotland, Barbara Crawford
states:
The only evidence that can be adduced for the Hebrides in this period is
all very indefinite: the last bishop of Iona occurs in the late 10th
century, while the first of the bishops of Man who received a bishop's seat
there [I assume that 'there' is Iona - CD] was Hamond (a Manxman) in the
days of Godred Crovan, ie after his conquest of Man in 1079. However two
earlier bishops about whom the medieval compiler of the list of the bishops
of the Isle of Man knew nothing except that they were called Roolwer and
William, may be identifiable with known bishops of Orkney ... (p 82)
As a further question, I am interested in the York / Orkney connection and
the Bishop of the Orkneys in the 1120s-1130s Ralph Nowell. He was a York
based priest and acted as the Archbishop of York's suffragan. A reasonable
amount is known about him from a York perspective, but does anyone know of
any Orkney records about him (especially family connections). He appears in
York completely 'out of the blue' and to trace him to an Orkney family
would be excellent
