medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
For the canonization of Charlemagne, a good place to start would be the
works of Robert Folz, Le souvenir de la le/gende de Charlemagne dans
l'Empire germanique me/die/val (Paris 1950); and "La chancellerie de
Fre/de/ric Ier et la canonisation de Charlemagne," Le moyen a^ge 70
(1964), 13-31. I don't remember whether he dealt with Charlemagne in Les
saints rois du moyen a^ge en Occident (du VIe au XIIIe sie\cles), Subsidia
hagiographica 68 (Brussels 1985). Another item is Juergen Petersohn, "Die
paepstliche Kanonisationsdelegation des 11. und 12. Jahrhunderts und die
Heiligsprechung Karls des Grossen," in Stephan Kuttner, ed., Proceedings
of the Fourth International Congress of Medieval Canon Law = Monumenta
iuris canonici, series C, vol. 5 (Vatican 1976).
Sorry I can't offer anything more recent.
Good luck,
John
