medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I sent the inquiry to medfem-l list and this is what I got:
------
"DeAragon, RaGena" <[log in to unmask]>
On the marriage, the dowry lands were administered by the husband.
Should
his wife die childless, the dowry reverted to her heirs. Should a
child
have been born alive (i.e., having cried out), but died even within
minutes,
and the wife died, the husband could retain control over her dowry for
his
lifetime. It would then revert to the wife's heir(s).
Should the husband die, the widow regained control over her dowry and
dower
lands until such time as she remarried.
