I was following Cottineau on the rededication. But the matter is
complicated by the adjacent cathedral's having already been referred to as
that of St. Agatha and by a controversy over whether it were originally
dedicated to St. George. Cf. White, op. cit., p. 108, n. 5. Modern
historians usually refer to the medieval monastery from its foundation
onward as that of St. Agatha. Updating, revising, and expanding on White
in several respects are Giovanni Spinelli, OSB, "Il monachesimo benedettino
della Sicilia orientale nella prima eta' normanna," in Gaetano Zito, ed.,
_Chiesa e societa' in Sicilia: L'eta' normanna_ (Torino, 1995), pp. 154-73,
and the preceding article in the same collection, Enrico Pispisa's "Il
vescovo, la citta' e il regno" (pp. 137-54). A good starting point for the
later history of the diocese is Giuseppe di Fazio, ed., _La diocesi di
Catania alla fine dell'Ottocento nella visita pastorale di G. Francica Nava
(Roma, 1982; Thesaurus ecclesiarum Italiae recentioris aevi, vol. 15, pt. 1).
Best again,
John Dillon
