medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. April) is the feast day of:
Agilbert (d. c. 690) Agilbert was a Frank who studied in Ireland, probably
becoming a bishop there. He then went to Wessex, where he was given the
see of Dorchester. But A. took offence when his diocese was divided (which
may or may not have had something to do with his inability to speak the
language) and A. cleared out. He was the most important representative of
the Roman side at the synod of Whitby, then returned to Francia, where he
became bishop of Paris.
Macarius the Wonder-worker (d. c. 830) Macarius was a native of
Constantinople (actually, he took the name Macarius when he became a monk).
He became an abbot, and a spokesman of the monastic anti-iconoclast party,
for which he was imprisoned and tortured under Emperor Leo the Armenian.
Leo's successor released Macarius, but M. still refused to support the
imperial iconoclast policy, so he was exiled to an island off the coast of
Bithynia, where he died.
Hugh of Grenoble (d. 1132) Hugh was the son of a French knight, educated
at Valence. He became a canon there, but soon became secretary to the
bishop of Die. In 1080 he became bishop of Grenoble, consecrated in Rome
by Gregory VII. H. was a very vigorous proponent of the Gregorian reform
movement, an important builder and restorer of both secular and sacred
buildings in his diocese (including a bridge and a marketplace), and
granted the Grande Chartreuse to St. Bruno, providing much needed support
in the early days of the Carthusian mother house.
Gilbert of Caithness (d. 1245) The Scottish Gilbert was archdeacon of
Moray (where his account books miraculously survived after an enemy tried
to burn them) and in 1223 succeeded the murdered Adam as bishop of
Caithness. G. was responsible for building the cathedral of Dornoch as
well as several hospices for the poor. He was noted for his preaching and
good administration. G. became the patron saint of Caithness; until 1545
oaths were sworn on his relics.
