medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Whatever conceit may have been used to describe these white and black
costumes, I suspect that a more fitting and appropriate place to look
for such courtly affectation might be the court of Burgundy in the
15th century. The dukes of Burgundy quite famously wore black, and
there are depictions of the court, as well, all dressed in white.
King Rene of Anjou's Book of the Heart Seized by Love, an unctuous
mid-15th century romance, in its famous illuminated version in
Vienna, as well, is full of black and white knights, ladies, and
hermits.
