medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. March) is the feast day of:
Brillus of Catania (d. c. 90) Brillus is supposed to have accompanied
Peter from Antioch. He became the first bishop of Catania (Sicily) and,
surprising for a saint with apostolic connections, is reported to have died
naturally of old age.
Martyrs of Alexandria (d. 342) During a Good Friday service in a church in
Alexandria, a group of Arians and non-Christians burst in and killed as
many of the worshippers as they could lay hands on. Athanasius was present
at the event; he escaped, and left an account of the massacre in his second
apology.
Enda (d. c. 530) Enda was a native of Meath (Ireland). He was a soldier
before becoming a monk, trained at Candida Casa (Scotland), then returned
to Drogheda. He founded several monasteries in the Boyne valley before
settling on Inishmore. He was a pioneer of monasticism in Ireland.
Nicholas of Flue (d. 1487) The Swiss Nicholas was from a young age a member
of the lay association "the Friends of God" (a group that sounds rather
like Franciscan tertiaries) while pursuing a career in public service
andthe army. He and his wife produced 10 children. In 1487, though,
Nicholas resigned his offices, left his wife and children, and became a
hermit at Ranft. "Brother Klaus" became an important spiritual advisor,
including mediation to prevent the Swiss cantons from falling apart in
squabbles with each other just after they had won their independence from
the duke of Burgundy. Nicholas' cult began immediately after his death,
winning approval at the local level in 1669; he was canonized in 1947.
