medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm reading _Pilgrims and Pilgrimage in the Medieval
West_ and find: "[...] the chronicler Walsingham noted
that the Lollards concentrated their fire on
pilgrimages 'especially to Walsingham and to the cross
at the north door of St Paul's in London, where there
was nothing of the spirit, but only putrid stumps
crawling with worms; by which the ignorant mob were
misled and forced into the most obvious idolatry.'"
Could someone kindly explain what on earth this is
about? What "putrid stumps" and how could same force
people into idolatry? I tried looking in the notes but
found nothing of use to my query.
Many thanks,
MG
