Dear medieval-religion colleagues,
Indeed, the list exists in order to provide a forum for 'scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture'. That being said, as an aid to scholarship, the list has encouraged its members to mention new works in relevant subject areas; in particular, we are tremendously indebted to Tom Izbicki for his contributions. There may be times when other announcements of interest and use to scholars may be appropriate. If you are ever in the slightest doubt about whether you could or should send a message to the list, please contact the list owners at:

The owners will advise you as to the best route to follow.
We are particularly keen to avoid purely commercial announcements, of the type 'Brand New Book, Available for only $x.xx, Order from x, Do It Today'.
For what it is worth, in my opinion the message to the list sent by Graham Gould concerning reviews for the *Journal of Theological Studies*, though not an example of scholarly discussion, is a perfectly acceptable and polite notice that would a) help maintain the high level of intellectual discourse in relevant journals and in our disciplines; b) provide an opportunity for scholars (particularly, but not exclusively, younger ones) to publish; and c) let an interested scholar get a free copy of a book on which they would otherwise have spent a lot of money.
I hope this is acceptable to you.
Best wishes,
George Ferzoco
