medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. March) is the feast day of:
Perpetua and Felicitas (d. 203) Perpetua was a young matron of Carthage;
Felicitas was a slave. The two were martyred with several companions in
Carthage. The account of their martyrdom (the first part by Perpetua, the
end by an eyewitness to the martyrdom) spread throughout the Christian
world, making their cult well-known and encouraging their use as important
examples in any course on early Christianity.
Paul the Simple (d. c. 339) Paul was an old Egyptian farmer. When he was
60 he left his adulterous wife and became one of the first disciples of
Antony. At first Antony didn't want to accept him because of his age, but
Paul soon proved to be so humble, obedient, and innocent that he won the
titles of "the simple" and "the pride of the desert." He was noted for his
miracles of healing and gift of discernment.
Drausius of Soissons (d. c. 576) Drausius was bishop of Soissons. He
strongly encouraged the monastic life in his diocese, even getting the
tyrannous Ebroin to build a convent near the city. For this reason he is
invoked for help against the plots of enemies. Thomas Becket is supposed
to have visited his shrine before his final return to England---which
suggests just how effective Drausius' intercession was.
Ardo of Aniane (d. 843) Ardo (originally named Smaragdus) was Benedict of
Aniane's travelling companion and hagiographer. He succeeded Benedict as
abbot of Aniane.
Volker of Siegburg (blessed) (d. 1132) Volker was a monk of Siegburg and
missionary to the Obodrites. He was killed by his would-be converts.
