medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
After the pocket edition of the Lexikon des Mittelalters, published by the
Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag in Oct. last year (amazon.de sells it for only
EUR 250!), Brill is now considering an English translation of the Lexikon. I
guess it is going to cost a lot more.
I forward their message.

Subject: Brill Medieval Scholars Survey
4 March 2003
Dear Scholar:
Brill Academic Publishers is now seriously considering undertaking the
translation into English of the German encyclopedia of the Middle Ages,
LEXIKON DES MITTELALTERS (LEXMA), published by Metzler Verlag
(1979-1999).
The English translation of LEXMA will offer a complete panorama of life
in Europe from 300 to 1500 a.d., including everyday life, philosophy,
literature, art history, etc. Expected to span 12 volumes and include
updated bibliographies, this major scholarly work will consist of over
eight thousand pages and be published from May 2004 through 2008. An
electronic version of the encyclopedia is also being considered for
online delivery or on CD-ROM.
The input of scholars studying the medieval period will play a vital
role in shaping the format, pricing, and delivery of the English
edition. We have created a survey, available online at
http://www.brillusa.com/survey/lexmascholarsurvey.html
<http://www.brillusa.com/survey/lexmascholarsurvey.html> , designed to
gauge interest in an English translation, assess its utility in teaching
and research activities, and identify specific features important to
medieval scholars. The first 50 respondents will receive a free copy of
their choice of one of the following books:
1. The World of Gregory of Tours, edited by Kathleen Mitchell and Ian
Wood (ISBN 9004110348)
2. Crusaders, Condotierri and Cannon, edited by Donald J. Kagay and L.
J. Andrew Villalon (ISBN 9004125531)
3. Preacher, Sermon and Audience in the Middle Ages, edited by Carolyn
Muessig (ISBN 9004114165
4. In Praise of Songs, Cynthia Robinson (ISBN 9004124535)
5. The Society of Norman Italy, edited by G.A. Loud and A. Metcalfe
(ISBN 9004125418)
To offer your comments, simply go to our web survey, located at
http://www.brillusa.com/survey/lexmascholarsurvey.html
<http://www.brillusa.com/survey/lexmascholarsurvey.html> , complete the
multiple-choice questions, add any additional opinions or suggestions,
and submit to us no later than 14 March 2003.
We are also undertaking a separate survey of librarians regarding an
English translation of LEXMA. If you know of any librarians at your
institution who might be willing to participate, please direct them to
http://www.brillusa.com/survey/lexmainstsurvey.html
<http://www.brillusa.com/survey/lexmainstsurvey.html> .
Thank you in advance for completing this survey. On behalf of Brill
Academic Publishers, I appreciate your time and consideration.
Yours truly,
Amy Hirschfeld
