medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. March) is the feast day of:
Chad (d. 672) Chad was a disciple of St. Aidan and brother of St. Cedd.
He succeeded his brother as abbot of Lastingham, and went on to become
bishop of York. But Chad was deposed in 669 and Wilfrid took his place;
Chad soon went on to become bishop of Lichfield. C's veneration began
immediately after his death; Bede describes his shrine, and the habit of
mixing dust from C's tomb with water, to be drunk by ailing humans and
beasts.
Yuhannan d-Morun (d. before 707) Yuhannan was a monk of Maron (northern
Syria). His reputation for learning led to his consecration as bishop, and
then as first patriarch of the Maronite church. Y. was responsible for the
hierarchical organization of the newly autonomous church.
Charles the Good of Flanders (d. 1127) Charles was a son of Cnut of
Denmark. After a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he became count of Flanders.
He was much loved by the people---except for the overly powerful and
violent he tried to curb. Charles was murdered in Bruges during mass, and
almost immediately was honored as a martyr.
Agnes (Anezka) of Bohemia (d. 1282) Agnes was a daughter of Ottokar I of
Bohemia. She was betrothed as a child, and was raised in a Cistercian
convent, but her bridegroom died before the wedding could take place. Then
A was betrothed against her will to Emperor Frederick II---it took papal
intervention to get Fred to give up his claim on her. Then A. became a
Poor Clare and abbess of a convent her brother founded for her. She was
very active in care of the poor, and founded a hospital in Prague. A. was
beatified in 1874 and canonized in 1989.
