medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Oh learned listmembers:
It looks like I may be able to get some "faculty development" funding, and
I want to realize a long-held ambition: to learn at least rudimentary
medieval (rabbinic?) Hebrew. And I would very much like some advice. I
live in the depths of the SE United States (Mississippi), and there is no
Hebrew instruction of any sort at my university. How can I go about
learning some Hebrew that would be appropriate to reading medieval Jewish
texts? Are there correspondence courses? Would one start with biblical
Hebrew or modern Hebrew as the option closer to what I want? Are there
"teach yourself" books on rabbinic Hebrew that I just haven't been able to
find? As a starting point, I'm good at languages and have ventured into
the Germanic, Romance, and Greek families (and a little bit of Czech), but
never a Semitic language.
If there are any Hebrew scholars out there who could answer some of my
questions, I'd very much appreciate any advice you could give me off-list.
Many thanks,
Phyllis
Dr. Phyllis G. Jestice
