medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. March) is the feast day of:
Priscus, Malchus, and Alexander (d. 260) These three Christians of
Caesarea (Palestine) hid during Valerian's persecution but reproached each
other until they decided to go together to the governor and profess their
faith. The governor didn't appreciate this. They were tortured and then
thrown to the wild beasts in the games.
Hesychius (d. 434) Hesychius was a priest of Jerusalem, noted as an exegete.
Guntram (d. 592) Guntram was a king of the Franks, highly lauded by
Gregory of Tours. His long reign was prosperous, he protected the
oppressed (including even his nephews, which seems awfully rare for a
Merovingian king), and was generous to the poor. Gregory reports miracles
both before and after Guntram's death, including some he (Gregory, that is)
witnessed himself.
Tutilo of St. Gall (d. c. 915) Tutilo, as the name implies, was a monk of
St. Gall (Switzerland). He was a noted painter, musician, and composer,
also highly regarded for his obedience and self abnegation.
Conon of Nesi (d. 1236) Conon was a Basilian monk who became abbot of the
Greek monastery of Nesi (Sicily). He was a noted miracle worker.
