Since I did not follow the whole thread, I am not sure if this example
has already been cited.
In the mural paintings from Sigena (or Sijena) Abbey (Zaragoza; but now
in the Museo Nacional de Arte de Catalunya) there is a depiction of
your "strange bird".
These paintings are in a very poor condition due to a fire they
suffered during a bombing in the Spanish Civil War. I have scanned a
pre-1936 b&w photo:

Maybe there is some recent bibliography, but the one I know is:
W. Oakeshott, Sigena: Romanesque Painting in Spain and the Artists of
