medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
With the exception of a few fragments on the Psalms preserved by Paul of
Bernried in his Life of Gregory VII, Anselm of Lucca's biblical
commentaries are lost. But there is a surviving sermon, _De caritate_,
edited by Edith Pásztor, “Motivi di ecclesiologia di Anselmo di Lucca. In
margine a un sermone inedito,” Bullettino dell’Istituto storico italiano
per il medio evo e Archivio muratoriano 77 (1965), 45-104, at pp.
96-104. Additionally, a group of five prayers (three eucharistic, two
marian) is ascribed to him; these were edited by André Wilmart, “Cinq
textes de priere composés par Anselme de Lucques pour la comtesse
Mathilde,” Revue d’ascétique et de mystique 19 (1938), 23-72. The prose
Life of Anselm by the priest B. (formerly ascribed to a canon Bardo; text
in MGH Scriptores, vol. 12 [1856]) has its moments and the slightly later
verse Life of him by his (not immediate) successor as bishop of Lucca,
Rangerius (d. 1112), is a fairly impressive literary achievement (text in
MGH Scriptores, vol. 30, pt. 2 [1929]). Worth reading if you get the chance.
Best,
John Dillon
