medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Lena,
The best starting point for an inquiry such as this used to be Enrico
Carrara's _La poesia pastorale_ (Milano: F. Vallardi, [1909]; in series
"Storia dei generi letterari italiani"). That's still useful, but now I'd
go first to Stefano Carrai, ed., _La poesia pastorale nel Rinascimento_
(Padova: Antenore, 1998; Medievo e Umanesimo, no. 101). Bibliographical
references on Gualtiero [da] Sanvitale or San Vitale (also Gualterius de
Sancto Vitale), active at Ferrara, will be found in Italo Pantani's article
therein, at pp. 53-54, n. 53. Probably the best place to go for
biographical information on G. is still Giorgio Rossi, "Il codice estense
X.*.34. Appendice III. Gualtiero Sanvitale e le sue rime," _Giornale
storico della letteratura italiana_ 33 (1899) 271-87. There's a discussion
in Carrara at pp. 220-22. Michele Scherillo's ed. of Sannazaro's _Arcadia_
(Torino: E. Loescher, 1888) has G.'s eclogue "Virtu'" at pp. 353-64.
Domenico de Robertis has a classic article dealing in part with scholarly
attention (or lack thereof) to early vernacular eclogues in Italian,
"L'ecloga volgare come segno di contraddizione", _Metrica_ 2 (1981),
61-80. This is another good place to look for bibliography.
Tania Basile and Jean-Jacques Marchand, eds., Antonio Tebaldeo, _Rime_
(Ferrara: Panini, 1989- ), I, p. 41, cite a Budapest ms. (late 15th/early
16th) with poems by G. This and others will surely be in Kristeller's
_Iter Italicum_.
Best wishes,
John Dillon
