medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. March) is the feast day of:
Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 387) Cyril was a native of the Jerusalem area. He
became a priest there, and bishop in c. 349. He was involved in a dispute
over jurisdiction that led to his banishment---three times (!) Cyril was
anamed a doctor of the Church in 1882.
Edward the Martyr (d. 979) Edward was a king of England, son of Edgar and
Aethelflaed. He became king in 975, but was murdered four years later.
Perhaps because Ed. had supported the English monastic part, his death was
regarded as a martyrdom. There were miracles, and by 1008 Ed's feast was
celebrated throughout England, ordered by Ed's half brother Ethelred "the
Unready" who by that time was probably desperate to get any spiritual
advantage he could.
Anselm of Lucca (d. 1086) Anselm became bishop of Lucca in 1073. He sided
with Gregory VII in the Investiture Contest, and was an ardent reformer.
He tried to reform the life of his canons---they didn't want to be
reformed, and kicked him out with imperial support. Anselm then moved to
Canossa, where he became spiritual advisor to Countess Matilda of Tuscany,
and reformed her churches and monasteries. Anselm was a noted biblical
scholar and canonist.
Christian (d. 1186) Christian was a native of Ulster, and became a
disciple of St. Malachy. He went with Malachy to Clairvaux and stayed
there to become a monk. In 1142, C. became the first abbot of Mellifont in
Ireland. He supported Malachy's reforming policies and became bishop of
lismore in 1151, as well as serving as papal legate.
Fra Angelico (d. 1455) Fra Angelico (Guido da Vicchio) was born near
Florence. When about 20 years old, he and his brother became Dominicans at
Fiesole. "Brother John of the Angels" (or "Fra Angelico" as he became
known outside of the convent) became one of the great artists of the
quattrocento, especially noted for his fresco cycles in Rome and his
frescos at San Marco in Florence, where he served as prior for several
years.
