medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. March) is the feast day of:
Sophronius the Sophist (d. c. 639) Sophronius was a native of Damascus.
He became a monk and traveled widely with the mystic John Moschus. In 634
S was elected patriarch of Jerusalem where he had two serious problems to
contend with: the monothelite heresy, and the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem.
S. is supposed to have won better conditions for the population from
Caliph 'Umar, but still he was banished from the city and died soon after.
Oengus (d. c. 824) Oengus the Celi De (or "Culdee") wrote the earliest
Irish martyrology. He was a monk of Dysert Enos and then Tallacht. At the
latter community, O. is supposed to have concealed his scholarly abilities
so he could be assigned menial work; he was uncovered, though, because he
secretly coahced a poor student.
Euthymius of Sardis (d. 840?) Euthymius was a monk who became bishop of
Sardis (Lydia). He was banished from his see for opposing the iconoclasts,
and despite several offers to let him return in return for a less
intractible attitude, E. remained firm in his position and in exile for 29
years. Finally he was flogged to death.
Eulogius of Cordoba (d. 859) Eulogius was one of the martyrs of Cordoba.
He was imprisoned for a time along with the bishop and other priests when
persecution was provoked by a wave of Christian attacks on Muhammad.
During this time, E. wrote several apologiae of the martyrs. When the
archbishop of Toledo died, E. was chosen to succeed him, but was killed
before he could be consecrated. This was provoked because E. hid a Moorish
convert to Christianity. The apostate was discovered, and when implicated
E. publicly denounced Muhammad. He was beheaded.
