medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hmm. My sources aren't very helpful on this. On a second look, I
discovered that Aymeric and Alberic and Albert are alternative versions of
the same name; two of my sources said Aymeric first, so, not knowing
anything about Carmelites, that's what I put down. And unfortunately most
books of saints aren't useful bibliographically; the online index of saints
I use quite a lot (http://users.erols.com/saintpat/ss/ss-index.htm) cites
L.C. Sheppard, The English Carmelites (1943) as a source. Attwood actually
has a joint entry for "Berthold and Brocard, hermits." To summarize, he
says Berthold was the first superior of the community of hermits on Mt.
Carmel; when he died in 1198 he was succeeded by Brocard, "who in c. 1207
had the customs of the hermits incorportated in a formal rule by the Latin
patriarch of Jerusalem, St. Albert of Vercelli."
This is starting to sound so confused that it's easier to believe the
seventeenth-century (?) claim made by the Carmelites that their order was
founded by Elijah.
