Sorry for cross-posting.
Just to add fuel to the fire, our service points have on last week highlighted a
small but measureable demand from Open University Students to run CD's on the
Public ICT, which connect to identified web resources, and which presumably also
may need to read-write to the PC's (we haven't investigated at this point).
So do we need to broaden out from just LearnDirect, and encompass this?, and
possibily other areas of FE/HE content, in the fullness of time?.
One for DfES vs DCMS/Resource, if we are to support Learning?
Regards
JU

Subject: FW: Running Learndirect courses on PN PCs

Dear Colleagues,
Further to the debate about running Learndirect DC-ROMs and online courses
in libraries, I have received this message from Helen Milner at Ufi which
she asked be forwarded to the list. I think you will find it illuminating

A colleague has picked up your email to the Libraries email discussion
group. Thank you for escalating the learndirect implementation issues facing
Luton library and the People's Network in general. Ufi ICT are currently in
discussion with a Cambridgeshire node of the People's Network and can
provide this update:
a.. The People's Network operate a locked down PC desktop infrastructure
within libraries to ensure that public users have no access to the PC's
operating system.
b.. A few learndirect ONline courses and most learndirect OFFline
courses require some read/write/delete access to the client PC's operating
system.
c.. The People's Network are requesting a specific technical
implementation guide per course title, detailing every client Operating
System file location required during each learning session, to allow
pre-emptive PC configuration.
d.. Ufi ICT and Commissioning are working together to deliver this level
of technical detail per course title.
Additionally, ongoing discussions with the People's Network in
Cambridgeshire has revealed that their IT staff find it very difficult to
respond to adhoc PC configuration requests. To try and alleviate this Ufi
ICT have advised them to try and implement course batches over structured
time periods, ie. Do not try to offer the entire portfolio all the time,
just offer those that are manageable within existing resources.
As you will be aware, Ufi are working towards streamlining the learndirect
course portfolio as well as increasing the proportion of online materials,
which should also help with the implementation issues faced by PN. We will
supplement this work by analysing the range of course titles that PN wish to
offer via their infrastructure, and provide guidance on those titles that
require limited specialist support, thereby reducing the implementation
burden within their existing resources. This exercise could also provide a
useful framework for the emerging UK Online requirement, should the LSC
release funding for learndirect learning via this route.
I hope this is useful information. If you have any further queries I am sure
that the Ufi/learndirect staff in our Eastern Regional Office, led by Sue
Betts (email: [log in to unmask]), would be happy to help and refer any queries
to those with the most knowledge here at Ufi.
Best wishes,
Helen
