We import results the day before into our Exams/MIS System (UNIT-e from
Capita). We then use this to produce personalised mailmerge letters for each
candidate (including certification results and module results with UMS).
These are dropped into window envelopes on the Wednesday ready for posting
Thursday am.
We also prepare various reports (full alphabetical, by teaching group, by
score and various types of statistical analysis) for the staff that come
into college on Thursday.
Thursday morning, we use the paper results slips to do a thorough spot check
to ensure we are happy with the EDI data. Once this is done, the results
letters are put in the sack!
Candidates are able to get their results by visiting the site from 11.00am.
They are given their results personally by one of a team of staff who can
offer guidance/advice etc. in the case of problems. This team issue results
from the alphabetical list generated by the MIS.
If I was to put pressure on the boards it would be to release the EDI
results a day earlier, after all, they make this data available to the
universities several days before. I'd also want to put pressure on the
boards to extend the EDI entry\results services (e.g. other 'smaller'
boards, plus better coverage of non-GCE/GCSE).

Our students are advised that results will be sent out on the day by
first class post.
A room is set up on results day to be manned by teaching staff.
As soon as results arrive from the post office, normally before 8a.m.
we make photocopies. Copies are given to teaching staff and students
can come in usually from 10a.m. onwards and obtain verbal results direct
from them.
This seems to work quite well but I suspect we have a lower number of
students taking AS/A2 than some of you since we have a VI Form College
next door, but we do now have AVCE results at the same time. We use the
same method for dealing with these.

We get the results by EDI the day before, these are then imported to
our MIS
system and we write a report that replicates the result slip. These
are put
into envelopes - all completed on the Wednesday before, so students
can
collect them first thing on Thursday, and we are aware of any problems
in
advance so can warn tutors. Then when the real result slips arrive in
the
post on Thursday we post them to student home addresses, but can take
our
time as there is no huge rush. This has worked very well the last two
years.

I would be interested in finding out what is the earliest you release
the
results to your students. I collect ours from the Post Office at 7.00
am
except Edexcel (like to be different) arrives by special post, we like
to
envelope them, so do not let the student pick them up until approx
11.00 am,
I am being pressurised this year to have them available earlier.
I would welcome details of any systems you may have in place that makes
this
day less stressful.
