medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. February) is the feast day of:
Phileas (d. 306) Phileas became a Christian as an adult, and became bishop
of his city of Thmuis (Egypt). Soon after his consecration he was
arrested, and imprisoned for several years before his martyrdom.
Gilbert of Sempringham (d. 1189) Gilbert was of knightly family, but
handicapped so he couldn't pursue a career in arms. So instead he studied
in France and on his return to England founded a school for boys and girls.
His father gave him a parish church on his lands, and there Gilbert
founded a religious community of nuns. It became the mother house of the
Gilbertine order, the only order founded by an Englishman. G's cult
existed immediately after his death; he was canonized in 1202.
Andrew Corsini (d. 1373) Andrew was a Florentine by birth. He entertained
himself in his youth, then became a Carmelite friar (in 1318 and he was
born in 1302, so he can't have had too much time to be dissolute). Andrew
studied in Paris, then became prior of his community in Florence, where he
won a reputation as a preacher and healer. He became bishop of Fiesole in
1360, where he became proof that there *were* saintly bishops in the later
Middle Ages. He was canonized in 1629.
