medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. February) is the feast day of:
Valentine (3rd cent.) Or rather "Valentines"---the Roman Martyrology lists
two martyrs of the same name for this date. One was a Roman priest , the
other a bishop of Terni. Neither had anything to do with lovers.
Abraham of Harran (d. c. 422) Abraham was a Syrian hermit. He is credited
with converting a village in Lebanon by borrowing the money to pay their
taxes----after which he taught the grateful villagers about the faith for
three years and then returned to his solitude. Eventually, A became bishop
of Harran in Mesopotamia.
Cyril and Methodius (d. 869 and 885) The apostles to the Slavs were
brothers, born to a noble family of Thessalonica. In c. 863 the Byzantine
emperor sent them as missionaries to Moravia. They worked
enthusiastically, translating some of the Bible and the liturgy into
Slavonic and enjoying considerable success. C and M suffered
non-cooperation, obstruction, and in Methodius' case even imprisonment from
rival German bishops. Despite this, the brothers' work one the blessing of
the pope as well as of the patriarch of Constantinople. John Paul II named
C and M joint patrons of Europe, along with Benedict.
Nicholas Palea (blessed) (d. 1255) Nicholas was a noble Neapolitan who set
out to be a saint from childhood, living an ascetic life from the age of
eight. When he went to study, N. met Dominic and soon joined the young
Order of Preachers, becoming Dominic's companion on several journeys.
Nicholas was a noted miracle worker and preacher---like Francis, he even
once preached to an attentive audience of birds.
