medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colleagues,
First, let me express once again my thanks to all those who have so
graciously responded to my queries in the past. I must intrude on your
patience once again. My question is whether it was possible and/or common
for medieval people to obtain a letter absolving them from excommunication
or interdict and restoring them to the sacraments as a preventative measure
(or expression of renewed piety)? I have come across a case in which
several nuns receive such a letter of absolution, but I have no indication
that either they or the monastery as a whole had been previously
excommunicated. Do I then assume that they had indeed been excommunicated,
or,as I said, may this have been merely a preventative measure?
Many thanks for your consideration,
Sincerely,
