medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am not a specialist either. But I believe that it was Bernardino de
Sahagun (c. 1499-1590) who wrote the General History of the Things of
New Spain in 12 vols, part of it in the Nahuatl language (of the Aztecs
and others), which he learned and transliterated. He was present during
part of the Spanish Conquest under Cortes and seemed determined to keep
indigenous history alive. Apparently because his writings were so
sympathetic with the Amerindians that the Spanish monarch ordered that
his notes and writings be taken from him and brought to Spain.
