medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I would like to suggest very gently that unless I've misunderstood
Mr. Kippen's original message this isn't the appropriate forum for
discussion of the question as posed, since although the Book of Ruth
is unquestionably religious, it is not medieval. If it were a matter
of medieval exegesis of the passage that would be another matter
entirely [[1]], but may I suggest he direct his inquiry elsewhere? I
think he would be likelier to receive more authoritative answers, or
at least a greater number, from lists more directly related to the
Hebrew Bible; please note that I mean no disrespect to those who've
responded to the thread already.
One promising list is B-Hebrew:

Otherwise (since I've intruded on the thread already), I would
encourage investigation of scholarly commentaries on the book of
Ruth. The Anchor Bible is often found even in non-academic libraries,
and one might be able to find collections with (for example)
commentaries from the New International, Old Testament Library, or
(old but often still useful) the International Critical Commentary
series.
Here are a few lists of suggested literature on Ruth:

These are essentially random web pages I found with Google and others
could doubtless be found if they're not satisfactory.
Best,
John
[[1]] I will add that I'm very much enjoying Theresa Gross-Diaz's
postings to the thread and would personally be delighted with further
installments on Jerome's interpretation and that of later authors,
but I don't know that it's directly relevant to the original question
about the meaning intended by the author of the book.
