medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am writing before I check, and will respond again tomorrow once I have the sources; but I can verify that Cameron's colleague is correct. Even Jerome was aware of the connotation (I am not certain whether in Hebrew this was a euphemism, a double entendre, a homonymn, or what). Certain medieval glosses and commentaries on Ruth reflect this awareness; others either don't know or reject the implication, and focus on such symbolism of humility as Bret suggests. I will try to come back with more concrete answer tomorrow...
