Apologies for cross posting
seamlessUK (http://www.seamless-uk.info) is a NOF funded consortium led by
Essex County Council, of 9 local authorities and 14 key national
information providers working together to develop a national citizen’s
gateway and locally branded portals to deliver integrated local and
national public information.
The project has developed a community information thesaurus which is used
to provide controlled subject keywords.
The thesaurus is now available for other organisations to use, subject to a
small annual licence fee, to cover the maintenance and up dating of the
thesaurus, and agreement to the seamlessUK terms and conditions.
The thesaurus has been developed to be compliant with ISO 2788:1986, by
staff from Essex County Council’s Community Information Network Team,
working with an expert thesaurus consultant and partners across seamlessUK
and other areas of the public sector. It consists of approximately 2300
terms and shows relationships between preferred, non-preferred and related
terms in 15 hierarchical sections.
Topics covered include: Arts, Crafts and Media, Beliefs and Faiths,
Business and Employment, Children and Families, Disability, Education,
Careers and Training, Environment and Transport, Ethnic Origin and
Language, Government and Politics, Health, Law, Leisure, Science and
Technology, Social Issues, Advice and Support, and Sport.
The vocabulary used in the thesaurus reflects that used by the citizen,
rather than professional jargon.
The seamlessUK thesaurus can be supplied electronically in Text, Word or
XML formats. A web interface will be available later in the year.
Organisations who subscribe to the thesaurus will receive two updates a
year (first year - a full version plus one update) and will have the
opportunity to contribute new terms for consideration for future editions.
seamlessUK staff are also working on mapping the thesaurus to the
Government Category List. It is hoped this will also be available later in
the year.
