April:
Thanks for confirming the Lizars' curling map hasn't been acquired by BL
since the original request by the Kilmarnock David Smith (have just had it
confirmed it's a repeat request by the same person - maybe it was nearer 20
years ago that he first started looking!). Possibly a copy has turned up
since in bequests, house clearances, etc., car-boot sales, so one must live
in hope - if not in Kilmarnock.
Co-incidentally, in Cardiff on Saturday, I bought an ex-libris/book-plate
engraved by [W.H.] Lizars - so my interest continues.
Francis

Sorry to report that it appears a copy did not make it down to the British
Museum, now Library, map collection. The only thing about curling we show is
the 1979 Bartholomew international curling map. In case Francis wants to
curl up with that.

Additional to Diana's plea for information on location(s) (or existence?) of
copies of this curling map, a similar request was carried out - by
old-fashioned typed letters - some dozen years ago or more for a Mr David
Smith (not *the* David A. Smith of IMCoS, but at that time of the High
Sheriff's Court in Kilmarnock, I seem to recall). He had written to me (via
Margaret Wilkes, NLS Map Room) because of my (continuing) interest and
knowledge of the Lizars firm. Should any copies be found I, too, would
'curl' up my toes in glee.
Thanks
Francis Herbert

One of our users is interested in tracing a copy of a
curling map of Scotland published by the Royal Caledonian
Curling Club in 1850. He does not have a title, but the
minutes of the Club give details of the progress of the
publication.
1848 <...the Curling Map... is being prepared by their
indefatigable Brother Curler Mr Palmer...> [Mr Palmer was a
schoolmaster in Penicuik, Midlothian].
1849 < ...the map is now completed in a style which reflects
the utmost credit upon Messrs Palmer and Forrester...
...remuneration to Mr Lizars [engraver]... 500 copies to be
thrown off...>
1850 <The Curling Map is now ready for distribution...mainly
based on the Travelling Map of Scotland, lately published by
Messrs A & C Black, Edinburgh...
...the map contains the towns, railways, roads, ponds,&c and
has on the margin an alphabetical list of all the Associated
Clubs
....>
1851 <...351 copies sold...>
Copies are known to have been sold to the curling clubs at
Jedburgh and Kilmarnock.
Does anyone know of any surviving copies of this map?
Thank you
Diana Webster
