Hi
I am interested in sources that present the arguments for the benefits from
a more accessible society (transport, built environment etc.). I am
interested in all aspects but need to mount a case with sound economic
arguments. I have included a preliminary list below.
About the only reference that I could find that provided an estimate of
incorporating universal design principles into the built environment was
Steven Winter and Associates Inc., Tourbier and Wamsley Inc., and Building
Technology Inc. (1993), and involved an average 0.34% cost differential
(cited in Steinfeld and Shea 2001:35.8).
Steinfeld, E., and Shea, S. M. 2001, Fair Housing: Toward Universal Design
in MultiFamily Housing. in W. F. E. Preiser and E. Ostroff (Eds.),
Universal Design Handbook. McGraw-Hill: New York. pp. 35.31-35.13
In the Australian context there have been a number of publications that
assess the likely impact of providing access to public transport and the
built environment. However, these publications are heavily influenced by
relevant industry bodies
Australian Building Codes Board. 1998, Draft Regulatory Impact Statement
for the amendment of the Building Code of Australia (BCA96) provisions for
access and facilities for people with a disability. Australian Building
Codes Board: Canberra.
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. 1996, Review of Financial Estimates Used by the
DDA Taskforce to Generate Cost Projections on Accessible Transport.
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu: Sydney.
Price Waterhouse. 1997, Financial Impact Study of the Accessible Transport
Standards on the Private Bus Industry. Price Waterhouse prepared for the
Australian Bus & Coach Association: Sydney.
Any other sources would be appreciated.
Kindest regards
