Paul,
I have attempted to utilise the new features of MSSQL 2000 that,
theoretically, allow you to map an XML Schema to a relational one and then
import data. You can then access the data using XPath (much easier than
SQL). However, I have not succeeded yet (even with a small subset of the IMS
metadata schema). Microsoft are still looking at the problem (for three
weeks now) but I have not had a solution.
If this approach worked it would provide a good route for storing
metadata (as XQuery is likely to be implemented by MS soonish), but I think
you might like to follow Scott's and Phil's advice and look at the actual
requirements (what you need to store and retrieve on) before you decide.
If I succeed with the MSSQL route I will let the list know (don't
hold your breath).
Regards,
Ben

Subject: XML to Database (NLN)
Hi there,
I'm quite new to IMS, XML, metadata, etc. Phil Barker picked up my query on
another list and suggested I post here.
I'm trying to setup and index the NLN materials on our college intranet /
VLE. I need to know if and how I can convert the manifest.xml (metadata
tags) into a database schema for use in Access or MSSQL. It seems sensible
to use the info in the manifest files but I'm a bit lost as to how I can do
this. I tried using Filemaker Pro 6 but was hitting an error when I tried
to import the .xml file.
Any help or ideas will be much appreciated.
