medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Erik,
Perhaps you already have this reference.
"In a fifteenth-century Book of Hours (Bibliogh'eque Nationale de France, MS lat 1400)
the user is informed "Quicumque dixerit aut super se portavit hanc orationem sciet horam
sue et videbit virginem Mariam antequam moriatur ..." another from 1380 apparently
says nothing about the appearing of the Virgin.
This info. is from footnote 51 on p. 215 of:
D.C. Skemer, "Amulet Rolls and Female Devotion in the Late Middle Ages"
Skriptorium 55 2001 pp 197-227.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Listmembers
At the recent commemoration of Andrew Corsini (Febr.4th) did it struck me
that his vita is embellished with a "dated" miracle of the Virgin Mary
appearing to a person to predict his death (in 1373), he died 6 Jan. 1374
as bishop of Fiesole.
My first question is: does any other similar occurrence come to mind during
the second half of the 14th cent.? (Or even earlier).
Shortly after 1400 is it referred to as a miracle that had occurred "many"
times, among these before an unnamed abbess (in a source in Flemish).
The second question is if anybody knows if this incidence actually was
recorded shortly after the death of Andrew Corsini, or simply added to his
vita much later, when his cult was first approved in 1440, or during the
efforts by the Carmelites to obtain an official canonization which took
place in the 17th cent. under Pope Urban VIII, and suppressed again in
1969, after it had been proven that most of his vita was inaccurate (to put
it in diplomatic terms).
The reason for asking is the connection with a number of prayers of
uncertain date, where a rubric promise the reader a similar benefit. In the
most prominent of these prayers is it included in the text of the prayer
itself:
"...et in novissimis diebus meis ostende michi faciem tuam, et annuncies
michi diem et horam obitus mei. ..."
Any dated occurrences of this phenomenon between 1350 and 1390 are of great
interest!
Thanks
Erik
