Another saint who has left us an interesting textile relic, in this
case a heavily embroidered "veil" (or handkerchief) that she is said
to have handed to St. Francis just before he died. It's about 51cm
square, of linen embroidered in silk and gold, and in nearly perfect
condition -- it was conserved in 1982 and all it needed was gentle
washing.
BTW, I recommend the book I found this in to anyone interested in
textile relics. The English version is _Textile Conservation and
Research_ by Mechtild Flury-Lemberg (Schriften der Abegg-Stiftung
Bern vol. VII, 1988, ISBN 3-905014-02-5, translated from
_Textilconservierung im Dienste der Forschung_).
Its chapter on "textile relics" includes the cowl buried with St.
Antony of Padua, a girdle of St. Rupert or St. Victor from Salzburg,
the thousands of tiny silk fragments known as the "Virgin Mary's
dress" from Trier, a cowl of St. Francis which had been patched by
St. Clare with pieces of her own mantle, and several others.
