I agree with Larry and Colin that there are many gifts and good qualities
with regards to having Aspergers Syndrome and/or being on the autistic
spectrum, life is so incredibly rich and interesting. However, how do you
reason with a mother (or father or guardian) in a position, highlighted in
the article below, and assure her that her child is a valued human being,
when she does not have access to informed choices and when mainstream text
books, her friends, family, professionals and the National Autistic Society,
are telling her that her child is 'emotionally, physically and intellectually
damaged' (sic).
Mother gets probation for child abuse

Friday, January 24, 2003 - A woman
convicted of dropping her 7-year-old autistic son out of athird-story window
was sentenced Friday to six years of probation.
Cecelia Martinez, 32, was convicted in September of child abuse.
Arrest affidavits said she was ashamed of her son and wanted him to die.She
said her son Nicholas was not as "good-looking" as his brothers, accordingto
court documents.
Martinez originally told police that the boyfell out of the window at her
friend's apartment on April 21. She allegedlyconfessed to dropping him when
detectives interviewed her a day later, accordingto the affidavit.
Nicholas survived the fall.
As partof her probation, Martinez must also check into a residential drug
and alcoholtreatment program for women that is operated by Community
Corrections, districtattorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said.
She could face additional conditions as part of her probation at a court
review in June.
