medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The topos of a person returning from exile, etc. and
going unrecognized by parents, family, friends is
extremely common in literature of all sorts: mythology
of every religious persuasion, folktales, fairy tales,
etc. Joseph Campbell's _The Hero with a 1000 Faces_ is
an "ancient" classic, but still cited in up to the
minute works of literary criticism. I came across a
quote from Campbell in a book that appeared a few
months ago.
