medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thomas: I've been working on the canonization of Peter of the Morrone (a.k.a. Pope Celestine V), who died in 1296 and was canonized in 1313. Although it seems that at least one vita was produced *during* the process, I am not aware of any having been composed, or demanded, before the beginning of the process. What *was* necessary to get a papal canonization process started in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries was: a sponsor (to pay for the high administrative costs involved); and papal approval to investigate the holiness of the candidate. I agree with Susan's comments on the reception of miracles, i.e. that they should have more than a purely physical effect.
