medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. January) is the feast day of:
Malachi (d. c. 465 BCE) The last of the prophets of Hebrew Scripture.
Daniel of Padua (d. 168) Daniel was a deacon, the assistant of Prosdocimus
(the first bishop of Padua). D. was martyred. His remains were
rediscovered and translated on this day in 1064.
Gordius of Cappadocia (d. 304) Gordius was a centurian, dismissed from the
Roman army for his religious beliefs. When Diocletian's persecution broke
out, at first Gordius retreated to the desert. But then he went to
Caesarea and, during public games in honor of Mars, professed his Christian
faith. He was beheaded.
Genevieve (d. c. 500) Genevieve was born at Nanterre (France) and become a
nun at about the age of 15. She soon moved to Paris, which she helped
defend against the Frankish King Childeric. She soon won the admiration of
the Merovingians, though. She is famous for her posthumous miracles,
including the salvation of Paris from the Vikings and stopping an epidemic
of ergotism in 1129. The church of Ste Genevieve in Paris was secularized
in the Revolution and is now the Pantheon.
Fulgentius of Ruspe (d. 533) Fulgentius was a North African of senatorial
rank. After a good education and a bit of government service he became a
monk, and in 507 became bishop of Ruspe (Tunisia). Like other orthodox
bishops, he was banished to Sardinia by the Arian Vandals; he was not
allowed to return until 523. F. was an important writer of his time,
especially against Arianism but including other theological works.
Bertilia of Maroeuil (d. c. 705) Bertilia was a noblewoman from the
diocese of Arras. She married, but she and her husband decided to live in
chastity and help the poor and sick. When she was widowed, Bertilia became
a recluse near the church she had founded at Maroeuil (Flanders).
