medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. January) is the feast day of:
Felix of Nola (d. c. 260) Felix was tortured in the Decian persecution,
but survived to be a very successful missionary in the area around Nola.
He converted many, and was noted for his miracles.
Macrina the Elder (d. 340) Macrina was a disciple of Gregory the
Wonderworker. She and her husband went into exile in Pontus during the
Great Persecution. She is best known, however, as a grandmother---of
Basil, Gregory of Nyssa, and Macrina the Younger.
Barba'shmin (d. 346) B. was the third in a row of bishops killed by the
Persian King Shapur II. He was imprisoned for eleven months along with 16
companions, after which all were tortured and then executed.
Amadeus of Clermont (blessed) (d. c. 1150) Amadeus was the lord of
Hauterives (France). He became a monk at the Cistercian monastery of
Bonnevaux---along with 16 of his vassals (!). A. founded four monasteries.
Sava of Serbia (d. 1236) Sava was born in Bulgaria, the younger son of a
prince. He became a monk at Mt Athos. In 1206 he returned to Serbia,
where in 1219 he became bishop and first metropolitan of an independent
Serbian Church. He was a very active church- and monastery-builder,
furthered missionary work in his country, played a role in the development
of Serbian literature, commissioned translations of Greek religious texts,
and even found time for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. His relics were
burned by the Turks in 1594
